A bit about sleeping on vacation
This is the first time I’ve ever tried to be polyphasic on vacation — even when I did Uberman for 6 months all those years ago, I was in or around college the whole time. But it’s not as hard as I’d worried it would be (now that the conference is over. Speaking at a conference is totally different from being on vacation, and being a guest of my professor completely torched my chances of sleeping, mostly).
Yes, naps get shifted, usually by only a few minutes, and I’m surprised so far at how *not* a problem this has been. As long as it’s less than an hour’s shift, it doesn’t seem to adversely affect me, even at night. If I take a nap early because we’re going out or something, I usually get tired a bit in advance of my next nap, and if that happens I’ll take it early too, though things have so far ironed themselves out after that. If I’m late–I was an hour late for my ten p.m. yesterday, and had a full stomach to boot–I can get really tired and not want to wake up. But if I get up, stay mobile for at least half an hour and am still super-tired, I can go back down for another 20 minutes and that has always fixed it so far.
In other words, a bit of “winging it” works better than I’d anticipated. Little screwups don’t have to knock you off, as long as they’re not oversleeps (which I haven’t had any of since my two-day crash, mentioned before).
Oh, and I shortened my core to 2 hours last night with no problems (it helped that there was someone awake to talk to–I actually stayed up an extra hour, sleeping from 3-5, instead of getting up early as I’d originally planned!). I took an extra little nap around 7, which is becoming a good general method of staving off the horrors of early morning (I am by myself here in the early morning, still –everybody’s on vacation, so they’re all sleeping in).
If I didn’t mention it, I’m keeping my daytime naps at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m., because that’s how they have to be when I go back to work. The 10 p.m. one fluctuates between 10-11, whenever I get tired, and then tonight I’ll do a 2 a.m., sleep from 4-5, probably take another “in-between” at 7, then back to 9. I’m not tired from missing the hour last night…will this trash me tonight? We’ll see, I guess…!
