Sleep Lessons: Time for the Boomstick
Okay, so what happens when I take my 3 hour early is that I stay nicely alert all night, fall asleep at 5 a.m., hit snooze and oversleep until seven, and then–this’ll kill you–fail to get out of bed immediately and oversleep some more until nine. I could have woken comfortably at 5 or 7 if I’d just gotten a move on right away.
And that’s just revolting to me, though of course it’s in line with my usual behavior (monophasically, I mean). And while I’ve adopted polyphasism pretty completely, I never did break my habit of lolling in bed for a few minutes before getting up.
And now that the memory-centers have been triggered, I can vividly remember my tactic for adopting Uberman the first time, and how it involved flying right out of bed (or wherever; but I did primarily sleep in my bed, as my dorm room had no couch and no carpet) the second the timer went off. In the intervening years of being boring, I lost that habit.
It’s time to get it back.
I think I know a tactic for doing so that should work, and it should be less “hard” than “embarrassing”, since I can’t do it at night. Can I take this opportunity to mention how unbelievably annoying living in a house with a bunch of family is? By the time I actually get my own place again, I’ll be daydreaming of monastaries.
More on the details later.

No Followup? Is the technique similar to the one outlined on http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/04/how-to-get-up-right-away-when-your-alarm-goes-off/
Sorry, I should have posted or linked the followup here. Yes, the technique is similar, but more tailored to napping and to getting it down in just a few days rather than over a long period of time (since people adjusting to polyphase don’t want to wait, usually).
For myself, it helped a little, but I freely admit that I abandoned this idea way early — or rather, put it on hiatus. Turns out you NEED some place to yourself that you can practice this, preferably several times a day for several days. And I have NOTHING for privacy, as I’ve discussed elsewhere. Seriously, I don’t have a bedroom or even my own bathroom (I share one with five other people). With my husband and toddler and I living in about 650 sq. feet with no doors, there’s just no time, day or night, that I can do this exercise. It still sounds like a good idea to me, but it’d on hold until I buy that house I’m hunting. ;)
Thanks for the reminder!
