Somebody *finally* made this point on a forum I read, so I wanted to hurry up and spread the meme. ;)

Often, people who get their butts handed to them publically after being caught discriminating have this to say: Hey! I thought you guys were tolerant. You’re not being very tolerant of me right now!

Let’s overlook for the moment that the majority of these bigots are supposedly Christian, and what we could say about how Christian they’re being by judging themselves better than a whole group of God’s children. That one’s too easy.

What makes more sense is to remind the bigots (and the non-bigots who fall for the “hey-that’s-not-tolerant” line because it makes a pretty soundbite) that tolerance is about accepting the natural diversity of humanity.

Tolerance is about not faulting people for what they have little or no control over (their race, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, mental or physical illness or defect, etc.). It is about trying to overcome the ape-tendency to fear and hate anything different than you, and replacing it with recognition of the logical fact that we are stronger, as societies, because of the diversity of our species. Tolerance is trying to be the opposite of people who, like Hitler, aren’t comfortable unless everybody is like them, or like they think everyone should be.

Tolerance is NOT about tolerating bigots. Bigotry is not a form of human diversity, nor is it something that people shouldn’t be held morally responsible for, like race or deformity. Bigotry is just being a close-minded asshole, and it IS in the best interests of human society to lay the smack down on you idiots every time you surface.

So you bigots can stop claiming some right to our tolerance, okay? At least until you manage to get Affirmative Action for Assholes made into law, you’ve got no claim. Part of spreading tolerance is being intolerant of bigotry, and speaking and acting against it wherever we can. You’re the enemies of tolerance, not a beneficiary of it. Just because we smart people try to be nice to others doesn’t mean we’re going to be nice to you after you discriminate against people.
