Words of Power

Hey yous guys…

What musical artist is your favorite for lyrics?

I’ve felt so lost since Live started slipping…I mean, Sage Francis is nice, but I’ve already chewed up his limited catalog.  Pearl Jam has pretty awesome lyrics too, I think, but unfortunately they’ve been around long enough to be mostly devoured by now as well.  And most everything else I like, I like in spite of the lyrics being "eh"…or worse.

I’m interested in whatever you like, but for the record, my idea of "good lyrics" means having at least three of the following:

♦  content beyond a) I’m so horny b) I’m so angry c) I’m so cool
♦  actual use of creative metaphor
♦  forced rhymes and scansion are absent or infrequent
♦  not every song should be written from a simple first-person (teenage poetry) point of view

Lyrical content that manages two of those isn’t too hard to find; those are what I call "eh" lyrics.  Lyrics that manage all four, I think the Enquirer is offering a million dollars for actual proof that they exist…  ;)

I wish lyrics weren’t so important to me–I know a lot of happy folks who can kind of ignore them, and wow I bet that improves the experience of modern music ahundredfold–but sadly, no such luck here.  I’m with…who said it?  Bach?  Handel?  Whoever said that music should be set to lyrics only sparingly, and only when the lyrics are really, really good (he was in favor of only using classical poetry or scripture) ~ it IS too easy for bad lyrics to ruin good music, darn it.

Anyway.  Pointers to cool stuff appreciated.  ;)
