Lazy Day

Okay, so I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just a fluke, so I waited six weeks before posting about it…but yup, I’m sleeping in on Saturdays.

Some people are polyphasic because they don’t like sleep, or don’t have a good time of it — and for chunks of my life, I’ve been those people.  Certainly I was when I started all this.  But I don’t dislike sleep now — I’m just too busy to indulge in it any more than I need to, and I happen to know that my actual needs are less than what I need when I’m monophasic.  So I’m not.  Make sense?  Right.

But I actually enjoy sleeping now; I don’t have sleep disorders, and my dreams, while weird, aren’t awful.  (I had nothing but nightmares for years at one point.  The brain, she is mysterious.  ;)  And sleep is relaxing, and feels nice, up to a point.  So I started letting my schedule slip a little on weekends, and when I found myself writing my Saturday-morning-sleep-in-time into my Schedule, I realized that I intended to keep the habit around.

I don’t sleep longer than 6 hours, and usually what happens is I don’t feel like going to bed on time on Friday night, so I let myself stay up a bit and then just sleep until I want to get up in the morning.  Typically this means 2-8 a.m., or something like it.  I have trouble sleeping past 8 a.m. for some reason, no matter when I go to bed, so I actually max out my lazy-time by getting to bed by 2.  Then I take my naps like normal on Saturday (though, especially if I didn’t sleep that much Friday night, I’ll sometimes get lazy and stretch a nice nap out, too), and I get up early like normal on Sunday.

I have no trouble getting "back into the swing of things" on Monday.  And I suppose this means that yes, polyphasic schedules can accomodate this kind of behavior, but please (I find myself saying again), remember that I’ve been doing this a year and a half.  My schedule has gotten nice and flexible and comfy now, like leather shoes.  If you’re just starting out, or you’ve been at it less than six months, I seriously wouldn’t suggest things like "sleeping in".  You could end up having to re-adapt every week, and/or end up with a longer adaptation period, and that would be no fun.

On the other hand, I can’t express how giddy I am that I can sleep in for a day and not have any negative reaction, schedule-wise.  Talk about cool!  Best of both worlds!!

In other news, the Scheduling project is moving along, though it could be moving faster.  I’m going out of town this weekend, which is making getting anything done tricky:  Whenever I have extra time,I have to use it to get ahead on my homework, which is seriously substantial this semester.  Things are getting done in general, but I need to tweak the thing some more; there are still vague spots, which I tend to fill either with homework (not good for the eyes, doing more homework per day than needed; but I tend to get sucked into the readings) or movies.  And I need to squeeze time in there for piano practice; I’m getting mega rusty.  Ah well.

Yikes, time to stop blathering and get to work!  I swear, these long mornings spoil ya after a while…
