Purchased… figured I might as well buy it at the full price though – it's valuable content, and it's already very reasonably priced :-).

Hi there!
This is great advice and I'm going to buy one if I manage to get on polyphasic sleep, yet there's a big question that troubles my mind and hopefully you can give me some quick advice.

I'm a collge student that's been sleeping up to eleven hours for the last three years. (OMG!)
Yesterday and Today I first started with the Siesta Method. 6 hours + 1 nap and I'm planning to gradually move up the ladder. Once I feel comfortable with my current schedule I will jump to the next phase.

Now, Is this correct or should I avoid making this slow changes. Maybe, acording to your experience it is better to make a full switch. What is your opinion on this topic?

Btw, the "levels" I'm planning to do are the following:
6 core + 1 nap
4 core + 2 nap
3 core + 4 nap
3 core + 3 nap (Is this last one recomended? I heard you switched from this one to 3+4nap.)

Thank you and I'm sorry for bothering you.
Take care! Cheers!

Hi Justacat, sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

I hear you about the eleven-hours thing; I did that and more for a while, too. (In my cause, the really ridiculous hypersomnia was a symptom of depression. It was and remains, though, a symptom that can be treated all by itself, and the treating of which tends to make the other symptoms ease, too. That’s 100% me, but I thought it might be worth knowing for you.)

There’s nothing inherently wrong with a gradual adaptation such as you propose, but it may mean more “adapting time” than you’d have if you dropped straight into Everyman 3/3 (you’re right, I often–maybe a few times a week–added an extra nap in there, if I needed it. The needing of that nap seemed to be tied to whether I’d slept well for all my other naps, whether I was having my period–ah, womanhood–or whether I’d had a really huge workout recently). If your sleep-schedule is very, very ingrained the way it is right now, though, changing it up a bunch may help ‘dislodge’ the old tendencies — or it may just make you feel horribly unhinged, like you have no schedule to fall back on. If that happens, or if the adaptation period proves too long, I would suggest backing off, getting rested again and then just trying the Everyman 3/3 schedule right out. Usually there’s only a few days of discomfort before that one begins to work, and then it’s just doing the scheduling to make sure you can stick with it every day.

Do buy the book, or ask questions at the Google Group or another area if you prefer, if you notice any tricky spots (like a nap you can never sleep for) — Some people with abnormal schedules to begin with fall right into a polyphasic schedule no problem; but others need to tweak it to account for their individual needs. Don’t be too surprised if you end up needing an extra nap or a longer core or something — but also, don’t make those kinds of changes until you’ve given adapting to the “proper” schedule a good solid try; you don’t want to get stuck making endless modifications!

Luck,
PD
